Eagles paid $100,000 for losing to Ghana

The Super Eagles got a winning bonus despite crashing out to the Black Stars in the second semi-final of the African Nations Championship.

Nigeria bowed to Ghana 4-1 on penalties on Wednesday to book a date with the Warriors of Zimbabwe in Saturday’s third place encounter.

In a meeting held at their President Hotel and Conference Centre in Bloemfontein on Thursday morning, Nigeria’s sports minister Bolaji Abdulahi in company of NFF president Aminu Maigari and some board members met with the players to redeem the pledge of $100,000 the sports ministry made to the team for defeating Morocco in the quarter finals and another $100,000 for the semi-final match against Ghana which they lost 4-1 after penalty shootout.

Abdulahi in his address hailed the resilience of the Eagles while affirming that President Goodluck and Nigeria as a whole salute the courage of the team against their West African rivals.

He concluded urging the team to win the third place match against Zimbabwe on Saturday. Zimbabwe will be gunning for their second victory ever against Nigeria when they clash at the Cape Town Stadium.
