The 23-year-old has been pushing for a January move after growing disillusioned at Borussia Monchengladbach and seems set to join the Magpies
Borussia Monchengladbach have revealed that striker Luuk de Jong is on the verge of completing a move to Newcastle.
The Bundesliga club delivered the following statement on their official Twitter account on Tuesday: "Luuk de Jong does not train with the Foals today. The attacker is on his way to his medical at Newcastle."
De Jong, 23, is a long-term target of Alan Pardew's and spoke candidly on Saturday over his desire to move and seek first-team football after falling out of the Monchengladbach starting XI.
He said : "I still have a week [to consider a transfer]. I just want to play again. I would still love to play for Monchengladbach, but when that's not possible I will look somewhere else.
The news of a move for the Netherlands international follows the expected departure of Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain for a fee of approximately £20 million.
De Jong moved to Germany in July 2012 after winning the Eredivisie under Steve McLaren with FC Twente in 2009-10 and scored eight goals in 31 games in his debut season in the Bundesliga.
He has failed to score in his 13 appearances this campaign.
